Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)
UTMC offers the most up to date cardiac surgical technology to address patients with significant blockages in their coronary vessels. These include traditional bypass surgery, bypass surgery without cardiopulmonary bypass (off pump surgery or beating heart surgery) as well as “hybrid” procedures in which the patient undergoes a robotic bypass procedure along with a stent implantation to combine the benefits of a surgical and catheter based approach to optimize the long term durability of the procedure. Surgeons at UTMC relay on maximizing the use of arterial grafts in patients undergoing CABG which have been shown to decrease the risk of future complications and extending patients life expectancy. Despite the emerging evidence that arteries should be used to treat blockages in coronary arteries, less than 10% of patients nationwide receive more than one arterial bypass as opposed to 70% at UTMC.
