Glaucoma care has improved dramaticaly in recent years with many new developments in both diagnosis and treatment.  Glaucoma is a condition causing damage to the optic nerve, the "video cable" carrying vision from the eyes back to the brain.  This is usually, but not always, associated with increased eye pressure.  Vision Associates offers the only comprehensive glaucoma service in the region.  Dr. John Burchfield takes care of all forms of glaucoma and works closely with the other specialty services at Vision Associates for patients with related eye diseases.  Among the technologies that we offer are:
  • Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT) Optic nerve mapping
  • True 3 Dimensional Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for evaluation of the optic nerve and its fibers over time
  • Static, Kinetic, and Frequency Doubled perimetry - state of the art testing of the peripheral or side vision over time
  • Stereo optic nerve photography - to document and evaluate subtle changes in the optic nerve appearance over time
  • Corneal pachymetry (ultrasound measurement of the thickness of the cornea, the clear dome over the pupil) - to accurately assess the measurement of intraocular pressure
  • Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) - special office procedure that can reduce the need for medications for glaucoma
  • Conventional glaucoma filtering and valve surgery - procedures to improve and regulate drainage of the fluid within the eye to control pressure

Dr. Burchfield works with all of the Vision Associates physicians and other area eye doctors to provide first quality, patient centered care.  He has years of experience teaching and providing the latest glaucoma therapies available.
